Hardik Pandya is all set to miss Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2025 opener against Chennai Super Kings on March 23. The MI captain earned a one-match ban after his third offence in IPL 2024 for maintaining a slow-over rate. As a result, the five-time champions will now have to look for another captain for their opening game of the new season. The options are pretty much none other than Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.
Rohit or Bumrah, who will be MI’s captain for IPL 2025 opener?
Rohit was MI’s captain for a long time before he was replaced by Hardik ahead of IPL 2024. While he could be the obvious choice for filling in Pandya’s shoes in the IPL 2025 opener, the team also has other options to look at. Under the Hitman, MI have won 87 out of the 158 games played, with the star enjoying a win percentage of 55.06%. In fact, the team’s choice to replace Rohit with Hardik was met with a lot of opposition, with fans booing the new skipper even at their own home ground – the Wankhede stadium.
However, Sharma’s record as a captain may be tip-top in T20Is, given that he called it a day after winning the T20 World Cup. However, it has been on the downside in Tests and has only recently seen an uptick in ODIs. The major challenge that awaits the Hitman is the Champions Trophy.

MI’s next best option is the veteran Bumrah. While the pacer has never led the side previously, he was dubbed to be the next in line after Rohit in IPL 2024, until Pandya overtook him to become the captain. While he is tipped to be the next India cricket team’s Test captain, MI will hope Bumrah will be fit in time for IPL 2025. While multiple reports have indicated that the pacer is expected to completely recover in time for the league, there is still no official confirmation on the timeline of his return to action.
In the absence of Hardik Pandya, MI’s best choices for captaincy are Rohit and Bumrah. It remains to be seen in which direction will the team turn to.
